Coral reefs make an ideal habitat for a large species of small animal and plant life in the coastal areas. Coral reefs are generated due to the calcareous remains of the corals that harden due to the sea waves and form reefs. The beauty of coral reefs are enhances by the sight of colourful small fishes, sponges, jellyfish, starfish, turtles, molluscs etc. all of which are found to take refuge in these coral reefs. Different types of coral reefs are noticed in various places. These include the fringing reef practically bordering the shore. The barrier reef as seen in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia is characterized by a partition from the mainland. Other types of coral reefs include the Patch Reef, the Bank Reef, Ribbon Reef, Apron Reef, etc.
